On a radiant Wednesday morning of 24th April, the students from Children’s Garden Home and School were eagerly preparing for their educational excursion. They were set to explore three distinct locations, brimming with anticipation for the day ahead. This remarkable experience was made possible by the Giraffe Centre organization, which meticulously organized every aspect of the trip.Their inaugural visit was to the Animals Orphanage, where they embarked on a captivating safari walk. The children were elated to observe and gain knowledge about a multitude of creatures, including endangered species, various rhinoceroses, lions, hippos, monkeys, hyenas, ostriches, zebras, and more. They were captivated by the wealth of information presented about these animals and were eager for further enlightenment.Subsequently, they ventured to Mamba Village, where they were enlightened about diverse species of Crocodiles, ranging from the diminutive to the colossal. The students were fascinated to uncover that crocodiles eschew chewing their food, opting instead to tear and swallow it, thereby elongating their digestion process. Furthermore, they learned that the sex of a crocodile is contingent upon climatic conditions, and to discern between male and female crocodiles, one must scrutinize the dimensions of their mouths and bodies. Additionally, they discovered that crocodiles regulate their body temperature by keeping their mouths ajar. The children were astounded to discover that crocodiles lay eggs, which can be consumed by humans.Their final destination was the Giraffe Centre, where they savored a delectable lunch prior to delving into the realm of giraffes. Renewed and eager for more knowledge, the children were enlightened about the endangered status of giraffes, particularly the Samburu, Maasai, and Baringo giraffes found in Kenya. They were enthralled by the Baringo giraffes, adorned with spots extending from their heads to their knees. Following the educational session, the children were granted the opportunity to feed the giraffes, an experience that left them exhilarated.Subsequently, the children were guided through an array of initiatives at the Giraffe Centre, which included tree conservation, water purification using plants, plastic recycling, and organic fertilizer production. They were engrossed by the concept of utilizing plants for water treatment, and the potential to repurpose water instead of channeling it to sewage systems. Moreover, they learned about harvesting and treating rainwater for hygiene purposes. The students were enthralled by the notion of recycling plastics and how they could be repurposed into various structures.Having attentively absorbed the teachings, the children were rewarded with saplings from the tree nursery project at the Giraffe Centre, with the pledge to nurture them diligently back at home. As dusk descended, the children bid a reluctant farewell to the day’s wonders. Nevertheless, their hearts were buoyant, having encountered a truly enchanting experience. With beaming countenances and indelible memories, they departed for home, their spirits soaring from a day spent in the most enriching manner—exploring, learning, and absorbing. They had amassed a wealth of knowledge and cherished the most extraordinary day of their lives.Written by: Kevin Njuguna.
